The Avengers: Age of Ultron Pinball

Zen Studios once again brings a Marvel property to its superb collection of pinball tables in Zen Pinball FX 2, The Avengers: Age of Ultron table based on the recent blockbuster. But despite some mostly excellent table design, and effective and relevant events for you to shoot for within it, there’s a slight air of disappointment surrounding the table that Earth’s mightiest heroes can’t dispel.

Certainly the table looks the part. Iron Man’s Hulk Buster suit’s glove kicks things off by shooting the balls onto the table. Meanwhile, Iron Man himself stands at the top of the table ready to battle Ultron who is opposite him. Black Window stands at the bottom, similarly ready for battle, while Ultron’s robot army occasionally falls from the sky to do battle with her and the other Avengers by invading the table. Furthermore, the Avengers Tower adorns the table’s left flank with a tunnel available to shoot at during certain events, a highly detailed image of the heroes and Ultron make up the main stage, and burnt out cars make up the upper stage acting as bumpers. It’s an attractive and fairly intuitive table.

Ultron Pinball 1

As Zen Pinball veterans would expect, different scenarios play out as you hit the pinball around the table. It all starts off with a multi-ball prelude event that provides two balls for you to rack up the score before the main loop of events kicks in. Once it’s over, it’s then a matter of readying each Avenger by shooting the ball up different ramps, then unleashing them or storing them in the Avengers Tower, fighting off Utron’s robot army as they descend onto the table, then assembling the Avengers when Ultron attacks in full force. It’s a good set of objectives that fits in with the general story of Age of Ultron without spoiling the film, it is, however, a bit generic if you hoped to relive the film’s experience.

Two of the more standout moments from the table’s events is the first person shooting as Hawkeye and the aerial combat as Iron Man against Ultron and his army, otherwise the events are fairly standard ‘shoot for specific lanes’ affairs, but reading the table correctly and achieving the objectives makes for some truly impressive scores and intense pinball action. It’s a bit of a shame, however, that the top stage is so difficult to see from the default table tilt. This can be changed in the settings, along with the difficulty, but this deactivates the leaderboards, and with competition being the main driving force behind the experience, this feels like too much of a compromise.

Ultron Pinball 2

There’s also a concern about authenticity. Whilst the script seems spot on, none of the film’s cast reprise their role for the table. However, the voice actors chosen in their stead achieved a close enough match to minimise the distraction, until Thor speaks that is, who sounds absolutely nothing like Chris Hemsworth’s character. The aforementioned loose tie to the film’s story also damages the authenticity a tad.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron Pinball table is great but one that can’t quite live up to the reputation Zen Studios have built for themselves. The other tables are so spectacular that a minor misstep damages a table more; events, visuals and mini-games are less inventive because we’ve seen them elsewhere; the direct link to a film property demands closer ties for authenticity; ultimately Zen are a victim of their own success.

Ultron Pinball 3

If you’re a Marvel fan then there’s no question about whether you should pick this table up, it’s a great Marvel inspired table. It’s a fun and entertaining experience to play that doesn’t fall into the trap of getting too complex despite a wealth of events to shoot for. However, its ties to the film are a little loose, and there are many other better tables available.

Dead Island 2 delayed

Things have been pretty quiet on the Dead Island 2 front in recent months and now we know why, Dead Island 2 has now been delayed until 2016.

The following twitlonger post gave us some more info:

We have always set ourselves a big goal for Dead Island 2: to create the sequel that takes Dead Island to the next level. A game that takes what our fans tell us they love about Dead Island – multiple different characters to play with, co-op, and turning a paradise setting into a zombie slaughter melee – and a game that adds a ton more content and combat options on top of that.

And we wanted to have all of that that done for release in Spring 2015.

We have been looking at the game long and hard, and we have decided we didn’t reach that goal we set out to achieve quite yet. This is why we have decided to delay Dead Island 2 to 2016.

Right now we are focusing purely on development, and we will have more info to share at a later stage.

We know that our fans will be disappointed by this news, but by giving Dead Island 2 more time we are confident that everyone will get a better game to play as a result.

Destiny : House of Wolves – Trials of Osiris

We begin today traversing into the Trials Of Osiris. This 3v3 no respawn intensive game type will require teamwork at its finest, communication and the best gear you have available to you. Like Iron Banner “power matters”. We saw footage from the team of Kevin Yanes, Triplewreck and Greg Requa where they took us through the Trials and took no prisoners in the process. Reviving team mates is key here as it is first to 5 rounds wins, games will only last 2 minutes so you will need to make every shot count! In the occasion that a round goes to sudden death it will be settled by a flag spawn, if it is not captured by time out then the closest living player will win the match for their team. Only one map will be playable every week to keep things familiar and give you a chance to come up with more new and elaborate tactics, games will be matched up with other players with a strong connection. Bring a fireteam guardian. you’ll need your best!

trials gear

Passage coins will be available for purchase, Mercy of Osiris, which will forgive your first loss in the trials. Boon of Osiris, which will make your first win count as 2! and Favor of Osiris, where you will start with one win. Every win will get you one step closer to a new packet, gun or piece of gear. We do not know what is inside these packets just yet but have been assured that they will contain good stuff! The cap is 8 wins in one run and the trials will stop when you either hit the win cap, hit the lose cap of 3 (rage quiting counts as a loss) or the tournament ends on its reset date. But do not worry, entry to the Trials is only 100 glimmer from Brother Vance and you can keep entering until you get the gear you deserve within the tournament period of Friday-Tuesday. Once you do make it past all 8 Trials all previous rewards are available for purchase too! Be on the look out for unique random drops after matches too, Legendary gear inbound.

passage

I think House of Wolves is shaping up nicely, new gear, new guns, new level caps and a weekly PvP end event that is forever changing so you will never have the same game twice. I can not wait till the 19th! LET’S GO!

Stay tuned next Wednesday for the final stream to bring us the Prison of Elders!

House of Wolves is out 19th May while Trials Of Osiris will debut on 22nd.

505 Games set to publish Overkill’s The Walking Dead

Overkills-the-walking-dead

Having previously published PAYDAY 2 and Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons, it will come as no surprise that 505 Games are set to publish Starbreeze AB’s next title – Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

Overkill are a Starbreeze studio, working hard on the new Walking Dead title that is set for a 2016 release and promises to deliver a brand new co-op experience for the Walking Dead universe, with new characters and stories.

Partnering with 505 Games partner with us on the console publishing for ‘OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead’ will streamline the distribution and marketing of the title in the traditional space and on the digital console marketplace. Having worked together before on the successful PAYDAY-franchise, we are certain this will be a fruitful collaboration.

Games with Gold for May unveiled

MayGWG_Hero

Thank goodness I don’t pay for Xbox Live Gold for the free games – another month, another poor showing for freebie titles – thankfully this month, I haven’t already purchased the Xbox One title so at least there’s that!

For the month of May, Xbox One owners will get CastleStorm: Definitive Edition, while Xbox 360 owners get Mafia II (available May 1-15) and F1 2013 (available May 16-31). I don’t know about you, but aren’t these titles a few years too late! I don’t mean to be ungrateful, but releasing old titles onto the program isn’t going to thrust it into the kind of limelight that Xbox would like.

As I said, we pay for Xbox Live for the multiplayer gaming, which thankfully is a solid platform and the free games are a bonus. Sometimes though, I wish they would put more effort into their choices or offer a similar program to last weekend’s NBA 2K15 and offer a limited time for the games – instead of giving away a game, you get to play it just for the month.
