In the US, a 70 strong SWAT team homed in on 17 year old Rafael Castillo’s house after beating his rival in an online game of Call of Duty! An army of Police officers with emergency vehicles, and even helicopters surrounded Castillo’s home in the belief that he had shot his mother to death and was about to run rampage on a killing-spree. This was based on information supplied from the rival player who had called the police acting as Castillo as a prank call.

Castillo quoted:

I thought there was a fire at my house. I ran up and saw my mom running out, I didn’t know what was going on. Then one of the police officers said somebody called and said that the mother and brother of somebody in this house was killed. I said ‘How is that possible if she’s right there and I’m right here?’

It was reported that the local special operations unit had spent 20 minutes shouting for Castillo to come out, but since he was wearing headphones, did not hear the requests. Oddly – nether did his mother? The Police stated that Costillo’s rival probably traced his IP address online to find out where he lived, and that this was part of a SWATTING craze that is sweeping the US.
