What Remains of Edith Finch is my favourite game of 2017 so far.

I can’t remember the last time I played a game that stuck with like this one did. What Remains of Edith Finch is a first-person narrative adventure developed by Giant Sparrow, who previously released The Unfinished Swan on the PlayStation.

You play as Edith, a girl trying to figure out why she is the only remaining living person in her family after she comes back to the house in which she grew up.

During the 2-3 hour game, you’ll explore the house, experiencing short stories about each family member, each story is told in its own unique way. The level of detail in the house is incredible and you can spend a lot longer just taking everything in, listening to Edith tell you her story.

As you move slowly around the house you’ll visit each family members room, before embarking on their story. This is where the game comes into its own, each tale is presented in a unique fashion, and despite their ultimately sad endings you can help but smile at each experience. Whether you are reading through a comic book panel by panel or experiencing bath time through the eyes of baby each story will capture your imagination.

This is a really hard game to review without giving too much away, the only thing that lets the game down are the awkward pausing when saving. Apart from that though the game looks great, is full of excellent voice acting and brimming with wonderful ideas that have set a really high standard in the walking sim/adventure genre.

I didn’t have access to the game’s achievements when I did my first playthrough and I am glad I didn’t. Don’t look at them, just play the game and then go back afterwards to pick them, you’ll thank me later.
