Last month, way before MCV reported that a next-gen console would have no disc drive – we were informed from a trusted source within the industry (who had left his job) that the current codename for Xbox Infinity, was for a service specific to TV’s and a way of getting a form of Xbox LIVE and it’s App’s and Arcade games into homes without the need for an Xbox 360 console.
More has come to light on this project thanks to MSNERD on Reddit via their “ask anything” day – and he claims to know inside information confirming that a stripped down, disc-less Xbox console will arrive in 2013. It apparently “does Arcade-style games & all the current & future media apps with Kinect (with near-mode). It will be an ARM-based platform price-competitive with the Apple TV (if you own a Kinect already).”
With thisisxbox.com being reliably informed that a service to get all the App’s onto TV’s without the need for an Xbox 360 console last month, combined with MCV.com recently being reliably informed that a new Xbox is on the way without a disc drive – this was likely an assumption to be a next-gen console, rather than a stripped down Xbox 360 which will act as a set top box for online Xbox LIVE services?
Microsoft hasn’t announced anything about this new Xbox Infinity box, but with E3 2012 now only a few months away – we’ll keep an ear to the ground and report more when we hear of it.
