Changes coming to Xbox Achievements?

In an interview with Windows Central, Xbox Vice-President Mike Ybarra has hinted at a possible change to the way achievements will work on the Xbox platform.

“We can do a lot more to reflect and let people show their gaming history and their status, whether it’s somebody who only plays multiplayer in Halo 5 at a professional level, maybe they only have 2,000 Gamerscore, you want to be able to celebrate that person.”

While Ybarra didn’t go into any details about how and when the changes will happen he also said, “We’re going to go big in the area of letting people show off and represent their gaming history and the type of gamer that they are, far more than we do with Gamerscore.”

I personally don’t see this as a change to the current system, but I do think we will see an addition to the current loved system that will reward those of you rack up 100’s of hours on multiplayer shooters.

New features rolling out to Preview members

The latest update for Xbox Preview Programme members brings a host of new quality of life changes, as well as a neat new feature for rare achievements.

The addition of Arena will allow like-minded Xbox One gamers to setup tournaments and challenges directly through Xbox Live. This should help with the painstaking task of having to use third party sites to create competitions, and allow players to get stuck in.

Looking For Group is another quality of life addition, which will let members post LFG requests with other gamers, all through the game’s Hub. As someone who has seen the struggle of getting a group together for a raid in Destiny, this should help ease that pain a little bit.

Recently, Microsoft decided to take a leaf out of Sony’s book, and show you the rarity of the achievements you have unlocked, and added their own twist to it, of course. Today, they are introducing a special notification when you unlock a rare achievement, including a brand new sound and visual to make it really stand out.

Have you unlocked any rare achievements, or have any thoughts on the latest updates to the Preview Programme? We’d love to hear your comments below.

Next-Gen Xbox LIVE Said To Be “A Little Like Twitter”

xbox_logo_2013

The next generation of Xbox LIVE, or what could possibly be ‘Xbox Gold’ or ‘Xbox Infinite’ is said to feature a great set of improvements to the social side of its functions as well as better Achievements. Also within the last week or so, rumours pointing to the Windows 8 core has surfaced again, but old news for us here at thisisxbox!

Polygon sources has confirmed that for Xbox LIVE there will no longer be a cap on the number of friends on your list: “The next-generation Live won’t have a cap on the number of friends a person can have. The way players add friends will also change. Now instead of it being a two-way friendship only, people can choose to follow one another, sort of like Twitter.”

Microsoft want to put more power in the hands of developers and publishers with Achievements, allowing more Achievements to be added after a games’ launch without the need for DLC. Polygon state the purpose of “this is designed specifically to allow developers to tweak player behavior, perhaps urging players to check out specific areas of a game or get past a difficult spot. Next-gen achievements can also be tied to broader events, like a weekend challenge or a communal goal, like contributing a set number of kills to the bigger goal of 10,000 kills over one weekend. Companies can also create cross-title achievements, like awarding points for finishing the first chapter in two different and unrelated games published by the same company. Some of these bigger, cross-title, communal achievements will be a requirement for all titles.”

Additionally Polygon sources said that in line with the Playstation 4 – the new generation Xbox will be able to capture video gameplay highlights with sharing options to social networks, and that it will be up to developers to decide if their games require an always on internet connection.

Microsoft hasn’t confirmed anything about the new improved Xbox LIVE and will announce the new hardware and its capabilities on May 21st 2013. If you would like to read more about what Polygon has to say about the new console then visit this direct link.
