Bioshock Collection review

It’s hard to imagine that 9 years ago I got to experience Rapture for the first time. I had no idea what lay ahead, but the Bioshock series would become one of my all time favourites. The Bioshock Collection would let me experience the magic all over again.

Bioshock, Bioshock 2 and Bioshock Infinite have had the remaster treatment, giving fans of the series a chance to start all over, while giving a new generation of gamers a chance to find out what all the fuss was about. For the purpose of this review we’ll assume Bioshock is new to you, if you’ve played them before, you’ll enjoy it all over again.

In Bioshock you play as Jack who gets involved in a unfortunate plane crash, thankfully he survives and manages to swim to safety – the lighthouse he swims to leads him to Rapture, an underwater city built by businessman Andrew Ryan. Something isn’t right though, as it’s population has discovered ADAM, a genetic material which can be used to grant superhuman powers. To survive Jack has to fight his way through ADAM obsessed enemies, including the iconic Big Daddies.

bioshockcollection1You’ll get to make use of the plasmids that can stun enemies with electricity, set people alight with fire and even alter minds to get help. There are also physical weapons to help you through too. Bioshock gives you the chance to be stealthy, offering an alternative route through some scenarios, it always feels tense and still makes me jump all these years later. The combat is tough at times, but once you learn to manage your plasmids effectively you can become quite the menace.

Being the oldest title of the three, Bioshock has received the most attention, and it looks fabulous. Rapture is an Art Deco utopia, a and if it wasn’t for the screwed up population would have been an amazing place to reside. It’s still a pleasure to explore the city, even more so now the frame rate has been improved.

Bioshock comes with some great additional content, first up are the challenge rooms. These challenges have nothing to do with the main game but involve puzzle solving to fulfil the requirements of the challenge. The Museum is a fascinating insight into the minds of the development team, showing ideas that were created, but never made it into the game in their original form. Finally as you play through the game you’ll discover reels that unlock Director’s commentary.

Bioshock 2 makes plenty of improvements to Bioshock’s gunplay, giving you the ability to dual wield plasmids being the main draw. Despite being built by a different studio under a new creative leader the story is excellent and experiencing a different side to Rapture is well worth your time.

The game is set 8 years after Bioshock and despite a slow start is another excellent title. For the first time you actually get to play as a big daddy, adding an new element to the gameplay. The extra content that comes with a Bioshock 2 includes the Minerva’s Den DLC and the protector trials, a game mode that has you protecting Little Sisters. The multiplayer component of the game didn’t make it over, which was a shame because it was actually pretty good fun to play.

bioshockcollection3Bioshock Infinite got given a really hard time by the press when it was released. It was the first of the three that felt most like a shooter and was also the only game with its head in the clouds, literally. Although the ending felt like a bit of a cop out, the world of Columbia was a delight to explore. Infinite adds a whole new element to its gunplay. ThecSky Rails that form a transfer network around the city gives Booker the chance to attack enemies from the Sky, with Elizabeth’s support you get to take on some amazing enemies. Infinite has to be the goriest of the collection too.

With Infinite being the youngest of the three it gets the least, if any amount of work on it in terms of the graphics. Again, Infinite comes with all the DLC, including the brilliant ‘Burial at Sea’ add-on.

If you haven’t played any of the games before, then the collection is well worth spending time with. Coming in at around £40, you are getting three games with a massive amount of add-on content. All of the games look fantastic and despite some performance dips, most noticeably in Bioshock 2 this really is a package worth picking up.

TiX Crowd Funding Spotlight is our latest weekly feature showcasing a selection of projects on the likes of Kickstarter and IndieGoGo that are either being primarily developed for Xbox platforms including Xbox Games for PC/Windows Phone or include stretch goals that will see the project released onto either of those platforms.

In our first weekly edition we have an old PlayStation game ‘Fan Edition’ looking to make its way to Xbox One. A 2006 Xbox 360 classic looking for a revival. An RPG drawing inspiration from Thief, Deus Ex, BioShock, Skyrim and Dragon Age and finally a fan art book looking to raise money in the fight against cancer.

Strength of the SWORD ULTIMATE

Originally a PS3 game, Strength of the Sword gathered a massive following. Now Ivent Games, a two-man team, are hoping to re-release this ultimate fan edition on as many platforms as possible.

The entire original game is ported and polished as part of the new ULTIMATE game. Every location, every blood-thirsty monster from the original campaign will be back with as much bite if not more. New features include a PvP mode, CO-OP mode, Dark mode (hinted at as an awesome asymmetrical PvP marathon!) and an extended single player mode bringing the new ideas of Ivent Games to fruition.

Towards the end of the week, Ivent Games dropped the stretch goal for a current gen console release from $100,000 to $82,000 but there is a catch… backers of the project need to vote here for their console of choice. The winning console, well wins. To see this project released on Xbox One, click the link just gone and get voting!. Currently they’ve raised just shy of $51,449 and have 9 days left. Having passed $43,000 the game will see a release on PS Vita and the Wii U, which although we are happy for Ivent Games we want to help push them to Xbox One. Crystal Quest Classic

Crystal Quest Classic is a revival of the 1987 award-winning video game. The original was played on almost every Macintosh computer in existence before being ported to the Apple IIgs, Amiga and the Game Boy – followed many years in 2006 by a reawakening on the Xbox 360.

All the addictive levels and mesmerising gameplay of the original have been retained in the design of Crystal Quest Classic. The goal is to match the mechanics of the original with even better sound and graphics. Plus the developers want to get it on as many platforms as possible. Although the initial plan is to release it for PC, Mac and Linux, with a little more support and funding Crystal Quest could see itself back on the Xbox platform.

Crystal Quest Classic has only managed to raise just short of $3,000 towards their $14,000 target. That said there are still 7 days left to back the project. So check out the full project page on Kickstarter here support them if this revival is up your street.

Game Artists unite to battle cancer

Gamers for life book

Gamer for Life is a Fan Art Tribute book. 283 game artists came together and donated 476 art pieces to be used in this campaign to raise funds for the fight against cancer. In 2012 Kevin, a game developer at Blizzard was diagnosed with stage four Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma, an incredibly rare cancer with no cure and no clear treatment path. This project came to be when those close to Kevin decided they had to do something for their friend and fellow game developer, Kevin Kenai Griffith (KKG). Unfortunately in Oct. 2014 KKG passed away, as the content for the book was completed.

The initial goal for the funds raised by the book was to cover Kevin’s medical expenses. When Kevin passed he had no unpaid medical expenses. Gamers for Good were able to financially support his memorial event. Now 4 months on, word has spread beyond those with personal connections to Kevin and gained interest from around the globe. Artists from Blizzard, Riot, Carbine, Activision, Microsoft, Ready at Dawn, GREE, Tencent, Turtle Rock and many more have all come together to contribute to this book.

In order to try to stay as close to the original intent of the project, the organisers we will be splitting proceeds of this campaign between 2 charities in KKG’s memory; Games Changers and CureASPS. With 18 days left this project is almost there having raised $38,847 of the $40,000 target. Donators will receive a variety of thank you gifts so check out the project page on IndieGoGo and donate what you can.

Underworld Ascendant

And finally another project that caught our eye was Underworld Ascendant the rekindling of the Underworld universe. Ultima Underworld (and Ultima Underworld II) are fantasy RPGs that influenced  RPG titles like Neverwinter Nights, Skyrim and even BioShock. The project has been picked up by The OtherSide Entertainment who between them have worked on over 25 award-winning games like Deus Ex, Neverwinter Night, Dishonoured, Medal of Honor, Uncharted, Last of Us, BioShock Infinite and many more.

Far more than a dungeon crawler, Underworld Ascendant features a dynamic, player driven narrative, an improvisation engine, intense combat and inventive magic, create your own character class feature and new ‘stretch RPG’ mechanics.

Although not immediately set for a console release, they have a mystery stretch goal yet to be announced. One has to hope that the team with their experience of releasing titles like Dishonoured and BioShock Infinite will make the jump to console, now that would be the perfect final stretch goal. I for one would love to see Underworld Ascendant make it that far.

With 5 days to go until the project runs out of time, The OtherSide Entertainment have managed to raise just their initial target of $600,000 towards development. You can check out the full KickStarter page here including additional detail, concept art and videos.

What makes a good “Twist”?

Given the content of this article, it should be clear from the get go that this is going to be a spoiler heavy article. I’ll be sure to mention the name of a particular game IN BOLD before giving away it’s twists to give enough time for you to hit the emergency close button should it need to be utilised.

Everyone loves a good twist right? A turn in the tale that nobody (save a few smart alecs) saw coming. If I were to pose you the question of “what are your favorite gaming moments?” I’m sure that there would be a few good twists in there. The same can be said of TV shows and movies.

Like all good things however, they can turn sour when used too much. Both the first Saw movie and The Sixth Sense had big twist endings that were very popular. So in an attempt to recapture that particular lightning in a bottle, the rest of the Saw series, plus a lot of M. Night Shyamalan’s later movies, followed in suit with big shocking reveals in the final reel. However, they were usually criticised for feeling forced, unnecessary and simply being a twist for the sake of a twist.

This brings up a few questions: What makes a good twist? Are there set rules or parameters to follow?

Lets take a look at one of my favorite twists (from one of my favorite games) of all time as a case study. STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC. You play as a simple soldier in the republic who eventually becomes a Jedi. Your masters marvel at your skills and you’re set out on a mission to save the galaxy. So far so basic. Just past the halfway point, however, you come face to face with Darth Malak, the enemy of the game, who reveals that you are actually Darth Revan, the evil Sith ruler whom people have been talking about the entire game and was thought to have died years ago but has had their memory wiped and their connection to the force severed.

Knights of the old RepublicA massive twist you didn’t see coming? Sure. However, simply being unexpected isn’t enough to leave a lasting impression. Learning about your past changes the way you look at everything. You can start the game form the beginning and see characters reacting differently and what their hidden agenda could be. I even started behaving differently, why shouldn’t I? I’m not some nameless Jedi anymore still trying to find their way in the galaxy, I’m Motherloving Darth Revan, the Sith Lord who single-handedly brought a galaxy to it’s knees!

There is a slight parallel between KOTOR and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK in the impact their respective twists have on the story. Upon learning each twist, you almost expect, or at least wouldn’t be surprised if the hero should suddenly decide to turn evil, either to take revenge on the Jedi masters trying to manipulate you or to join your once thought dead Daddy to rule the galaxy together. Hell, an alternate ending to Return of the Jedi was going to have Luke putting on his father’s helmet and assuming the role of Sith Lord. The best of twists aren’t just pieces of information withheld from the audience, they affect perceptions and viewpoints.

Lets move even further from video-games for one moment. Look at GAME OF THRONES. The reasons I love the twists in this series so much is that they almost act like tonal check-points. No matter what happens, no matter what you’re told, you’re always expecting the same thing to happen right? Ned Stark would weed out the corruption, Cersei Lannister would be killed/driven from King’s Landing and the good guys would win. Which of course doesn’t happen. Though even after Ned gets a sudden pain in the neck, you expect the Starks to rise up against the Lannisters and avenge him. Of course they would, that’s essentially what the show is about now, right?….. right?

Time and time again these twists in the tale keep cropping up to remind us that no, this is not how the world of Westoros works. Simply being good isn’t a protector from evil. It forces you to view the show and it’s characters differently and realise that the unwritten rules you were previously following don’t apply here.

My point is that the twist has to be more than a nice decoration to hang on the wall, it fundamentally changes your viewpoint, maybe even your character. Going back to KOTOR, I had one friend who choose the light side, then changed their mind after realising they were already a Sith Lord. Even I, goody two-shoes whom I always play as, found myself yelling “I’m Darth Revan, watch your tongue or I’ll pull it out” at stupid Sith disciples trying to hassle me on Korriban.

Conversely, I’m always a little surprised when people talk about how great the twists in BIOSHOCK INFINITE, and to a lesser extent, BIOSHOCK are. I simply don’t understand the realisation that Elizabeth is your daughter and you also being Comstock are such shocks to the system. Unexpected, sure, though I just found myself shrugging, saying “Oh, OK sure”. I would actually argue that having Booker find out about Comstock earlier may have actually added more weight to the story and give Comstock some necessary presence, as he mostly comes off as just another bad-guy. No need for hype and drama, Booker could have just been informed of it earlier.Comstock_Statue

Bringing it up as a huge twist at the end simply didn’t accomplish as much. What does it add to the narrative? What does it change? For me it only brought up questions; why doesn’t Booker remember having a daughter? Wouldn’t seeing a girl with half a pinky missing be an obvious clue? While I’m sure that some flowchart, audio log or a convenient case of memory loss easily explains away a lot of the plot holes, that just feels more like a plaster added to remedy the problem later.

Woops, this is starting to sound more like a rant on Bioshock, wasn’t intentional I swear! The point I was trying to make is that the twists in Bioshock Infinite don’t really seem to change anything. At the end of the day, they don’t matter. Like in THE VILLAGE when it turns out that they are living in the present day as opposed to 200 years ago, who cares? Even in Bioshock, does realising that you’re Andrew Ryan’s son really matter? Sure, learning about Atlas’ deception is interesting, although I’d like to bring up a side note at this point; “hypnosis” in and of itself is not a twist, it’s a cheap device. This was also an issue I had with the ending of OLDBOY, whenever they need something explained, they wave it away with hypnosis.

Playing Bioshock a second time and hearing “Would you kindly” is certainly quite fun and the way it interacts with the level design is well done as you literally have no choice in the matter, but at the end of the day, it’s still hypnosis and as such is quite cheap.

It may be strange to call out convenient memory loss and hypnosis when just a few paragraphs ago I held up KOTOR’s twist as a prime example of a twist which essentially consists of both these things, which I suppose is a fair point. I was all set to write an arbitrary list of rules that twists must follow, but I suppose the most important rule has already been stated; for a twist to be effective, it must change our view of the characters, the world, the setting or all of the above. Otherwise, you’re just telling us stuff we didn’t know.

Look, I get it, twists are fun. They get us talking and they leave a lasting impression, but it’s hard not to feel that after a while it has almost becomes a money grubbing, bean counting tactic to gain publicity. CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE had a jaw droppingTeamplayer_shepherd_magnum twist in it’s nuke scene and the reaction was so positive that for it’s sequel CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2, they had even more, bigger twists, even when they made no sense in terms of story or design. Sure, wait until after an intense battle sequence before having the General suddenly show his true colors and murder you after AN HOUR OF PLAYING THE SAME SEQUENCE OVER AND OVER AGAIN I HATE THIS LEVEL!

Ahem, sorry. To conclude, a ground shaking twist is not a means to an end. Like everything else in your arsenal, it’s a tool. A tool to be used, or not, to the best of your abilities, to best tell your story, whatever it may be. Oh, and by the way, Rosebud was his sled.

Bioshock Developer ‘Irrational Games’ to Close

Founder of Irrational Games, Ken Levine, has announced via the official website that the developer, as we know it, is to be wound down. The developer, best known for Bioshock, is announcing this news just as the final piece of Bioshock Infinite is released. Levine said in the statement:

“I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two.  That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team.   There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition

In time we will announce a new endeavor with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.

When I first contemplated what I wanted to do, it became very clear to me that we were going to need a long period of design. Initially, I thought the only way to build this venture was with a classical startup model, a risk I was prepared to take. But when I talked to Take-Two about the idea, they convinced me that there was no better place to pursue this new chapter than within their walls. After all, they’re the ones who believed in and supported BioShock in the first place.

Thanks to Irrational and 2K’s passion in developing the games, and the fans who believe in it, BioShock has generated retail revenues of over a half billion dollars and secured an iconic place in gaming. I’m handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative. If we’re lucky, we’ll build something half as memorable as BioShock.

This is really sad news for the developers of one the most popular game series in recent years with Bioshock. We wish all the staff affected by this news all the best for the future and no doubt their talent will be snapped up in no time, and thank them for all the great gaming memories they have given us over the years.

Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea – Episode One Review

Irrational Games already had an absolute winner with the experience of Bioshock Infinite alone. Their first piece of single player DLC was always going to be a big seller, and many clamouring for their DLC after buying the season pass, it was time. All Irrational games had to do to make the general public giddy with excitement, was mention one word. One name rather, Rapture. So what with the game taking its glorious return to the where it all began, it was time to see if it could live up to the name, and to the expectations of the many who hold Bioshock in the highest regard.

So onto the content itself. Burial At Sea is set just before Rapture becomes the underwater haven that we know it as today, Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth are back together again for the adventure of a lifetime. Their mission is to find a missing young girl known only as ‘Sally’. Booker is well established in this implied alternate timeline in Rapture. He’s known as a bit a sleuth, a private detective that takes on any contract. Elizabeth is more of a mystery, much as she is in the single player campaign. Elizabeth has been given a wonderful fifties makeover. Complete with an elegantly fiendish looking outfit and cigarette. There are some characters and cameos you may recognise, but when I saw them I was pleasantly surprised. So I shan’t be ruining it for any of you fine folk.

Gameplay offers much of the same in the way of weapons and vigors. The return of splicers does add to the excitement somewhat. Not that it changes much of the gameplay, it’s just feels good to dive right in at these bastards again. Ammunition is quite scarce here. This leaves you to come up with creative ways of tangling wih your foes. Such as luring them to a wet patch and using Shock Jockey to send several thousand volts of electricity to their brains. This section of the review is of course short. As I’ve said, there’s nothing new here. We’ve all played this before, it works well and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Rapture looks just as stunning as it always has. Fans of Bioshock 1 and 2 will feel completely at home here. I spent as much time looking out of the windows and staring at the damp décor or Rapture as I did the first time I played the original Bioshock. Rapture as it always has been, is a marvel to experience.image_307100_16x9_940

For all my cries of “it’s very samey”, I don’t feel as though I was cheated out of a good experience while playing Burial At Sea. The story is fantastic, the graphics and the setting are wonderful as ever, gameplay although the same is solid to its core. The only area where this truly falters is its length. With minimal exploration, it can take less than an hour and a half to get through the entire thing. Although if you choose to play it in the true Bioshock way, it can take a lot longer. There is of course a lot to see, many audio files and bits of gear to find sprawled around the wet landscape. To sum it up in a sentence, Burial At Sea – Episode One is a good piece of DLC. It’s very short, but that is compensated for by the excellent narrative. The size of the content isn’t worth its price, I’m afraid. But it is still an excellent piece of work to play through. I can’t wait for episode two.

 

Ken Levine to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

With a career that stretches back 31 years, Levine’s accomplishments range from System Shock 2 right through to this years smash hit BioShock Infinite. If that doesn’t convince you of his credibility, Guillermo del Toro recently praised him as ‘one of the best world creators in any of the visual forms’.

Because of these and countless of other achievements, Levine will be presented the Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday night as part of the 2013 Golden Joystick Awards held in London.

Levine said of the news: “In most fields, people begin their careers being inspired by others. In turn, they hopefully end up inspiring others. The great thing about the still-maturing nature of video games is you get to be inspired by the work of novices and veterans alike. We’re all figuring out day by day exactly what the medium is capable of.”

This year’s awards marks the ceremony’s 31st, with a revamped shortlist of 15 categories, including Best Indie, Studio of the year and categories introduced to highlight innovation across all platforms.

BioShock Infinite: Clash in the Clouds DLC Out Now

2K and Irrational Games has today announced that BioShock Infinite: Clash in the Clouds DLC is available for download worldwide starting today for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE.

BioShock Infinite: Clash in the Clouds, developed by Irrational Games, is an action-focused downloadable content pack that presents players with a series of unique, intense challenges and a whole new gambit of combat opportunities. Players will combine a diverse toolset of weapons, Vigors, gear, Tears and Sky-Lines in four new areas inspired by the classic BioShock Infinite environments. In addition, by completing all 60 Blue Ribbon challenges, players will unlock exclusives in the Columbian Archeological Society, gaining access to new Voxophones, Kinetoscopes, concept art and more.

Also in development at Irrational Games, BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea – a two-part add-on campaign featuring an all-new story for Booker and Elizabeth, set in the underwater city of Rapture before its fall. These two campaigns will be available individually for £9.99 (1200 Microsoft Points), and are also included as part of the BioShock Infinite Season Pass.

The BioShock Infinite Season Pass is available now for £15.99 (1600 Microsoft Points) and includes all three pieces of add-on content, as well as the Early Bird Special Pack, which includes powerful weapon upgrades, exclusive gold weapon skins and infusion bottles to upgrade abilities.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Dated For August

2K has announced today that The Bureau: XCOM Declassified will be released on August 20th, 2013 in North America and August 23rd, 2013 internationally. XCOM: Enemy Unknown was developed by Firaxis Games and rebooted the classic franchise, the devs state now that ‘The Bureau’ will deliver a new experience within the XCOM universe.

Set in 1962 at the height of the Cold War, The Bureau tells the origin story of the clandestine XCOM organisation’s first encounter with a mysterious and devastating enemy. Originally established as America’s covert defense against the Soviet Union, The Bureau must adapt and overcome a threat unlike anything the world has faced before. As special agent William Carter, players will call the shots and pull the trigger, leading their squad of agents in the high-stakes secret war for humanity’s survival. Paramount to repelling the outside threat is The Bureau’s ability to cover-up the enemy’s existence in order to prevent worldwide panic.

In the spirit of the XCOM franchise, The Bureau’s calculated combat design requires players to think and act tactically. The game’s third-person perspective gives the player a sense of spatial awareness and grants them the freedom to transition in and out Carter’s unique Battle Focus ability seamlessly – heightening the tactical shooter action. The Bureau also fully embraces the concept of permanent consequence. As our last line of defense, every command can mean the difference between life and death for Carter, his squad and mankind.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified can be pre-ordered today at all participating retailers. Those who pre-order will receive the Codebreakers side-mission as a bonus. In this special campaign side-mission, a communications facility responsible for intercepting and interpreting the enemy’s transmissions has gone dark. Special Agent Carter and his squad must make contact with any remaining personnel and investigate the incident.

ThisisXbox Top Ten: Video Game Companions

After having spent some time playing the astounding Bioshock Infinite (which we scored a staggering 10/10), it got us thinking about about Elizabeth’s character. Is she the perfect companion? We thought we’d run through gaming’s most extravagant companions to see how she would stack up to the rest. We define a companion as either an AI controlled partner or just someone talking down a headset to help enhance the story and your objectives.

Let’s run down the top 10 right now.

Rush (Megaman 3, 1990)

Rush

 

Rush is Megaman’s trusty robotic dog who would appear to help Megaman get past tricky obstacles by using his ability to transform into a submarine and by using his springboard coil to bounce extremely high. Rush has appeared in almost every Megaman game since and has also made a handful of cameos in several Capcom fighters.

Captain John Price (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, 2007)

Captain PriceIf you were ever asked to name one Call of Duty character, 9 times out of 10 you would name Captain Price. A former member of the SAS, Captain Price is a no-nonsense soldier that alongside Soap MacTavish, goes through hell to stop the man who initiated World War III, Vladimir Makarov. Captain Price’s quick quips and charming British narcissism makes him a favoured companion amongst this list.

Cortana is a digitized clone of Dr. Elizabeth Halsey, who became centric to the Halo universe since the beginning. Guiding Master Chief on his journeys through thick and thin. Even having something of a starring role in 343’s Halo 4. Cortana is a fan-favourite amongst the Halo fandom, and it seems that she will be for a long time to come.

Claptrap (Borderlands, 2009)

ClaptrapClap Trap (CL4P-TP) is a Hyperion manufactured general purpose robot that you will often see slumming around town in the Borderlands series. His particular brand of humour which involves outdated pop-culture references and pushing dubstep upon the player, has made him accepted annoyance. Borderlands fans often speak highly of Claptrap, and it’s clear that with the unavoidable Borderlands sequels to come, Claptrap will definitely be involved.

Miles “Tails” Prower (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 1992)

TailsTails appears to be some kind of genetically mutated fox with two tails (hehe, I get it) that give him the ability to fly. He is one of the most famous sidekicks in history, next to Robin and Luigi, he may be THE most famous sidekick. If you weren’t aware (which I astonishingly wasn’t until I was way into my 20’s) that his name is actually a play on words meaning ‘miles per hour”, you may facepalm yourself into oblivion, much like I did. Tails wormed his way into our hearts with his annoying cries of “SOOOONIIIIIIIIIC”, and he will forever live there. What a guy.

Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect, 2007)

Garrus VakarianGarrus Vakarian is the popular Turian from the Mass Effect series. A former C-Sec soldier and the most badass member of the Normandy crew, Garrus had military training at fifteen and is the crew’s resident sniper. A character so awesome, that he brushed off horrific facial scars with a witty comment like  “Ah probably for the best. They were all ignoring you and hitting on me. ‘Bout time you got a fair shot.” when referring to the lovely space ladies. Garrus is cool, calm, collective, funny, and extremely badass. It’s a shame he couldn’t be higher up the list.

GLaDOS (Portal/The Orange Box, 2007)

GLaDOSWell this is a first. An antagonist making it as a top companion. GLaDOS is the central core to the inner working of Aperture Science. The Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System lives solely to test. When the protagonist Chell awakens from a coma, GLaDOS is ready and waiting to throw test after test after test at the newly awakened mute. It is truly GLaDOS’ humour that makes this machine a top companion, the writing staff at Valve truly have created a character for the ages in this machine. They certainly couldn’t top it. or could they?

Otacon (Metal Gear Solid, 1998)

OtaconHal Emmerich, code-named Otacon is a scientist and chief engineer of Metal Gear REX. Also best friend of Solid Snake. This relationship makes for some of the most hilarious codec conversations in the entire series. Listening to Otacon’s conversations with Snake about being trapped in compromising positions and even about Otacon urinating all over himself, means that the bond between the two makes for one of gaming’s best relationships.

Elizabeth (Bioshock Infinite, 2013)

ElizabethElizabeth didn’t quite make it to number one, even though she is gaming’s most perfect companion. Her relationship with Booker DeWitt develops as the game goes on. Her frail naivety develops into a strong independence. Her knack for not just being a damsel in distress is what makes her interesting. Booker wouldn’t survive his journey in Columbia without Elizabeth, and it’s easy to see why she is one of the most popular new characters in the last few years. I would hope that her story doesn’t end with Infinite, and that there are at least some glaring references when 2K make the next installment in the series.

 

Well after all that, who made the number one spot? It’s tough to find a character as whole as Bioshock Infinite’s Elizabeth. But the number one isn’t even a good character, he makes it there for the sole reason of being the funniest character in the history of gaming. So, let’s check out who it is…

 

1. Wheatley (Portal 2, 2011)

WheatleyWheatley is hands down the funniest character in gaming history. Voiced by lanky Western English comedian Stephen Merchant, all of his country charm is transfused with the robot nature of a Portal robot. In Portal 2, GLaDOS is still the villain, but Wheatley is the hero that saves the day. Bringing you through several of Aperture Science’s most rigorous tests to help you defeat GLaDOS and end her reign of terror. But don’t take my word for it, just check this out.
