Xbox Live Gold Family Pack Converting to Individual Memberships This Month

xbox live logo 2013

Microsoft has issued formal notices detailing the changes to the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack. All will come to an end on August 27th as part of a plan to make way for additional services on Xbox LIVE. The future of Xbox LIVE Gold on the Xbox One means that every individual account on a console can share the multiplayer benefits and other LIVE features without additional subscriptions. LIVE is changing for the better with Home Gold!

To ease the transition and to soften the blow for members who might not be getting an Xbox ONE (perhaps) a bonus is being offered. Microsoft will give each converted individual Xbox Live Gold membership 3 months of Xbox Gold in addition to any time remaining on your membership terms.

After your memberships have been converted, the only Gold Family Pack features that will no longer be available are activity monitoring reports and Microsoft Points allowances. Xbox Live family settings with parental controls will still be available.

Just to tease you with the wait for an Xbox One – why not watch the unboxing video just one more time!

EA To Abolish Online Passes – What Could This Mean for Next-Gen?

Battlefield-41-610x335

EA Games, John Reseburg has told VentureBeat in an interview that future EA games would not require online passes which we are meant to believe is the outcome of fan-feedback! Since when did fans become more worth than the thought of all that extra cash! It has left us wondering about what EA could know about the online functions of next-gen consoles with this announcement coming within a week of Microsoft’s next Xbox unveiling.

“Yes, we’re discontinuing Online Pass. None of our new EA titles will include that feature,” Reseburg explains. “Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format… We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”

I have come to the conclusion that with next-gen looming it might be a decision the company has had to make if Microsoft’s next Xbox perhaps renders the passes useless. EA’s Online Pass would be useless for two reasons; first being if on next-gen Microsoft takes a Sony approach and allows all multiplayer to be free (with paid access gaining use of Apps and messaging/party features). or secondly the long rumoured suggestion that all next gen games require a one-time activation code rendering used games useless anyway.

Are we really to believe EA has done something due to fan-feedback after all this time? Expect all new EA games which includes Battlefield 4 and FIFA 14 to be Online Pass free. Maybe they have done the decent thing in a bid to gain more credibility with gamers – or maybe not?

When next-gen announcements are made, if it does render online passes useless anyway, we’ll keep you updated.

INSANE Bargain Alert – Far Cry 3 Reduced on UK Games on Demand

farcry3a

Not only is Xbox LIVE Gold ‘Free’ this weekend in the UK for non-subscribers, but it includes Double XP on Gears of War: Judgment, Assassin’s Creed 3 and Far Cry 3. If that’s not enough – if you’re yet to even own Far Cry 3 (or you shamefully traded it in) it has been marked down this weekend on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace to £14.99. Shockingly much cheaper than buying new at retail this weekend!

ThisisXbox rated Far Cry 3 9/10 in our review last year:

Ubisoft delivers an intense and action-packed open world first-person-shooter with the recently released Far Cry 3. Straight from the offset you are thrown into a turmoil environment where your survival instincts are tested against a deadly pirate warlord – your goal is primarily just to escape, and then the deeper, more consequential story begins as you pack yourself off on a journey of discovery.

Even though Far Cry 3 has Double XP this weekend, multiplayer functionality will be unlocked across all Xbox games, including recent releases…

…Have a great weekend ahead and look out for our review of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon which is out now on the Xbox LIVE Arcade.
