Watch the Prologue of Hellraid

Earlier this week on September 16th, a live stream of the upcoming hack’n’slash title Hellraid was broadcast by Techland. Everyone who tuned in to Techland’s Twitch channel had a chance to see the game for the first time after its transition to Chrome Engine 6 – a proprietary next-gen engine known for fuelling Techland’s much anticipated Dying Light. The stream has been recorded and can now be watched above if you hit the play button!

In April, Techland announced that Hellraid would come to next-gen platforms and was now undergoing a transition to Chrome Engine 6, the latest version of Techland’s technology designed to take full advantage of the new hardware generation. In August, the effect of this profound change was presented to invited journalists at gamescom in Cologne, Germany. Now everyone can see how these months of hard work have changed Hellraid.

Hellraid is coming to PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One in 2015. A Steam Early Access for PC is planned for fall 2014.

Hellraid Shifts Into Next-Gen Territory

Techland has officially announced that its upcoming dark fantasy game, Hellraid will now run on a new engine and is heading to next-gen consoles alongside the PC release. The game has had a complete overhaul and will ship with new features and improved visuals thanks to the power of Chrome Engine 6 which is also used in Dying Light!

Since its reveal last year, Hellraid has expanded and evolved thanks to the developers’ experience and players’ feedback. While the game will remain faithful to its first-person co-op slasher gameplay, Techland has decided to implement new features and technology.

Hellraid will offer three different game modes. In the Story Mode, players will explore the world and try to repel forces of Hell. The highly-replayable Mission Mode will put more focus on arcade-style fun of climbing up leaderboards, creating the longest combos and beating high scores, while the completely new Arena Mode will offer survival gameplay with waves of deadly demonic hordes to fend off. All these modes will be available in both single-player and 2-4 players co-op.

Players will be able to create and customize their characters with armor, clothes, and accessories such as amulets. Thanks to a new class-free skill tree, they will develop a demon slayer perfectly suited to their play style by combining various active and passive abilities – divided into intertwined paths of combat, magic and agility.

Techland has also improved the game’s combat system, which now features one- and two-handed melee weapons, shields, magic staves and ranged weapons. With diverse fighting styles, counter-attacks, parrying and dashing abilities, the melee combat in Hellraid becomes even more complex and immersive. Additionally, magic will offer a wide and diverse selection of offensive, defensive and healing spells.

The combat experience is furthermore enhanced by weapon crafting, interactive environments, destructible objects and environmental traps, as well as challenging and adaptive enemy AI. With new gameplay features and technology, Hellraid moves from past-gen consoles to the next generation with the announcement of PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions coming in 2015.

Techland Hellraid Q&A

techland

Hellraid currently in development from Techland is a first-person co-op slasher that offers a single-player, story-driven campaign of hack & slash action and unique, competitive cooperation multiplayer that pits four players against the armies of hell – and each other – in a battle for points, rewards and fame. The game is scheduled for a 2013 release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

What is Hellraid?

We’re calling Hellraid a first-person co-op slasher. We invented this genre to capture the idea behind our game, which blends elements of classic hack & slash titles with a more advanced combat system based on timing and precision, RPG’s, shooters and multiplayer games into one unique experience seen in very immersive, first-person perspective.

Will gamers experience Hellraid only in co-op? What is the main difference between playing solo and in co-op?

Hellraid can be experienced both in single-player and in co-operation. While playing solo you explore the world, complete quests, gather loot and develop your character. In co-operation tension rises when you struggle to achieve mission goals while competing with your friends for points granted for each kill, team-plays and automatically generated challenges throughout the game.

What does the gameplay in Hellraid look like?

In Hellraid you travel between levels using a web of magic portals. Each level can be played an unlimited number of times to complete the story campaign, side quests and to defeat forces of evil with friends while competing for experience, points, rewards and places on leaderboards. During the game players can use a variety of melee, ranged and magical weapons. Combat is expanded with a set of unique active skills for each character class which gives the team additional tactical capabilities while searching for treasure, completing objectives, avoiding deadly traps, fighting the hordes of enemies and boss battles.

Will gamers be able to develop their characters, or customize the weapons and armor?

Each of the four character classes available in Hellraid (Warrior, Mage, Paladin and Rogue) will have their own skill tree that can be developed during the game. Along with that players can customize their weapons using an advanced crafting system or change their combat capabilities and appearance with armor that can be bought in shops, traded between the players or found during the game.

Who or what is Game Master?

Game Master is a complex system inspired by pen and paper role-playing games that makes each play through of Hellraid a different, completely new experience. In co-operation mode,  Game Master carefully selects competitive challenges for players and awards the best ones at the end of each level. It changes where and how you and your friends complete quests, placement, numbers and types of enemies you encounter as well as deploying treasure chests and loot.

Will Game Master work in single-player as well?

Yes, Game Master will alter the experience in single-player the same way it does in co-op but without the competitive challenges which are unique for playing with your friends.

How long is Hellraid and when it will be released?

Thanks to Game Master and the varied experiences that it provides, Hellraid will give players hundreds of hours of pure fun. The game will be released in 2013 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
