Dying Light DLC Competition extended

With all the negative press surrounding Bungie/Activisions Destiny & Red Bull exclusivity deal, many took to utilising their suffering at the hands of the community at large to promote their own game.

Most attempts fell flat, Planetside 2 in particular; given their own troubles, yet one developer has managed to find the balance that keeps it firmly in the tongue in cheek satire department. Techland’s #DrinkforDLC twitter campaign went down so well with gamers when they opened the campaign on Wednesday, that they have now decided to take a poke at another community gripe, as it appears they are now ripping on Sony’s recent decision to Crowd-fund Shenmue 3, even though it appears they intended to finance its development.

The #DrinkforDLC campaign now has added stretch goals for further free content, and they have also thrown a docket code in for good measure.

E3 Conferences 2015

E3 2015 is nearly upon us, and we here at This is Xbox are bursting with excitement.

We have some pretty strong predictions on what we’re going to see at the event – listen out for our E3 Predictions podcast coming soon – but it’s the unknown that really get our motor’s running.

“But when are these conferences actually happening?” I hear you ask. Well let me tell you:

Sunday, June 14
•Bethesda – 7 pm PT / 10 pm ET / 3 am BST (Monday)

Monday, June 15
•Microsoft – 9:30 am PT / 12:30 pm ET / 5:30 pm BST
•EA – 1 pm PT / 4 pm ET / 9 pm BST
•Ubisoft – 3 pm PT / 6 pm ET / 11 pm BST
•Sony – 6 pm PT / 9 pm ET / 2 am BST (Tuesday)

Tuesday, June 16
•Nintendo – 9 am PT / 12 pm ET / 5 pm BST
•Square Enix – 10 am PT / 1 pm ET / 6 pm BST
•PC Gaming Show – 5 pm PT / 8 pm PT / 1 am BST (Wednesday)

So those are all the announced conferences and their times – a couple of early mornings for us Europeans – but I for one will be awake and watching all of them, will you be?

Xbox One could be sold in China

Since the year 2000 consoles have been banned in China due to claims that there was an adverse effect on the mental health of young people who played them. Of course, this didn’t stop said young people playing games on their PC’s and nor did the ban stop a grey market trade of illegal consoles.

Today however the Chinese government has introduced a temporary removal of the ban and as such opened up the doors for Nintendo, Sony and of course Microsoft to enter an extremely rich market. The temporary removal of the ban isn’t straight forward at this stage, the government have stated they’ll allow foreign firms (Microsoft, Sony etc) to produce consoles in there free trade zone which resides in Shanghai. Once produced China’s Cultural Department will need to inspect and approve the device before its released on general sale.

Sony have already addressed and responded to the news stating they will ‘continuously study the possibility’. Microsoft have yet to provide a response. According to one analyst, Microsoft already has the edge over its competition in terms of getting consoles on the market the quickest.

Only time will tell if the people of China will finally be able to buy legal, non grey stock of our beloved Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Are You The UK’s Average Gamer?

nerd (1)

35 years old, earning £23,000 a year, plays games for 2.5 hours a day, five days a week – meet the UK’s “average” gamer

You wouldn’t believe how often I hear “Computer games are for kids“, “grow up and get a proper hobby, writing about games is kids business” or even the famous one “games are for nerds, not respectable adults“. Well guess what, you were wrong and I was right nah nah nah naahhh nah *pulls silly childish face*.

Recently a Social Media Network for gamers; Pixwoo.com commissioned some research to show the UK’s average gamer, and the results albeit surprising for you, don’t shock me as much.

A spokesman for Pixwoo.com, which commissioned the research, said:

The image most people have of a gamer is usually a young boy, holed up for hours in end in their bedroom, only stopping the game for food, drink and toilet breaks. But these results show that the stereotype couldn’t be more wrong. Not only are women just as likely to be gamers as men, but we are talking about fully grown adults who work, have a family and are in a relationship.

The study, of 2,000 Brits who consider themselves a ‘gamer’, found that they will spend a total of 12 hours and 32 minutes playing on some kind on console each week.

A spokesman for Pixwoo.com added:

This snapshot into the lives of ordinary gamers disputes many myths about the pastime, showing how integrated gaming is into our daily routine. Pixwoo.com is launching am iPhone and Android app for gamers to share their passion among friends old and new, offering a place to talk about games without being bothered by aspects of other social networks, like pictures of what people are having for dinner.

So what does the average gamer look like? Here’s the detail:

  • Play computer games five days a week, for 2 hours and 32 minutes each day.
  • Will stay up until 10.58pm playing games.
  • Has stayed up until 1.12am on occasion.
  • Owns two different consoles.
  • Owns 18 games.
  • Can complete a game in four-and-a-half weeks.
  • Will go to a midnight opening for a new game once a year, spending four hours queuing each time.
  • Has two rows a week with their partner about gaming.
  • Has five online friends in the gaming community.
  • Is 35 years old.
  • Earns £23,244 a year.
  • Is married or in a relationship.
  • Has one child.
  • Drives a Ford, Vauxhall or BMW.
  • Works almost 32 hours a week.

So there we have it. Gaming is an adult thing to do therefore confirming my belief that writing for and about this industry is a grown up hobby.

What do you think? Does the above describe you? Are you an ‘average gamer’? Let us know in the comments below.

ThisisNotXbox Top Ten: Best Playstation 3 Exclusives

images (1)

Many a jealous gamer has spouted their mouths off with ridiculous slurs such as ‘PS3 has no games’. Those of us with superior intellect know that it does in fact have many games. Here to dispel the rumours is a list of the 10 best of the best Playstation 3 exclusives. Have you been playing an inferior console? If you have, we know how you feel.

walking-dead-memeThis here list will give you some insight into the great world of the Sony Playstation 3. Let’s move along.

Resistance - Fall of Man Logo

Do you have a hunkering to shoot down hordes of intergalactic invaders that threaten to overthrow everything you hold dear? Well, Resistance: Fall of Man is just the title to get. The only game of its kind and if there are any other similar games, who cares? This is better.

9. Killzone 2 Logo

Killzone 2 is the sequel to Killzone from the brilliant Playstation 2. Well it went next-gen with the first sequel and it out did itself. There are no other shooters that have ever encapsulated this kind of impact. Except Resistance, but they are two completely different, amazingly developed games. To shoot things in a very different way than Resistance, give Killzone 2 a go. It is splendiforous.

Heavenly Sword Logo

Ever played DmC: Devil May Cry? Well Heavenly Sword was ushered into the godlike Playstation community by the very same creators. Ninja Theory currently have a reputation for churning out top quality sleeper hits. Heavenly Sword is no exception to the rule. Hack, slash and Nariko’s wit and superiority to enjoy yourself one hell of a game.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale Logo

Don’t you just hate it when a platform has a good idea for a game yet can’t put the ink to paper because of their limited mindset? Well the heroes at Sony took a valid formula from the dreadful Smash Bros series, and made it their own with Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. Picture Smash Bros with better, more suited characters from the more refined universe of the Playstation. Like Nathan Drake, Big Daddy, Raiden, Dante, Sly Cooper and many others.

Little Big Planet Logo

It just goes to show our little powerhouse’s strength when we have a game with such power. Creation is what Little Big Planet is about. Your mind is the only roadblock. There aren’t any other games on any other console that share that mentality. Well, Minecr…no, just Little Big Planet. Plus,Sackboy is so cute.

inFamous Logo

No free roaming sandbox style action adventure game has featured a man with superpowers before. Well, there’s Prototype, The Incredible Hulk and several Spider-Man games. But inFamous 2 has a morality mechanism. It is an important part of gameplay as it will determine whether you have blue electrical powers, or red electrical powers. Cole is such a cool guy, too. Much better than Mason and Hulk and Spider. So ner.

God of War III Logo

The adventures of Kratos have never been duplicated. The best hack and slash game in history. This God of War has spawned a huge series that cannot be matched. God of War III is definitely one of the contenders for the best game on the Playstation 3, all games ahead of this have earned their spot but from this point on, consider these games the best of the best.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of te Patriots Logo

Well, here is where the Playstation 3 has instigated a coup. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is our exclusive. No one else has it, we are the greatest. There is no need for me to explain this game. Hideo Kojima has once again graced us with an amazing movie with some linear gameplay that is even more action packed than the previous three.

Uncharted 2 - Among Thieves Logo

Nathan Drake was the man who overtook Lara Croft and Indiana Jones in every way in the excellent Uncharted. When Uncharted 2: Among Thieves came out, it absolutely blew Uncharted out of the water. Uncharted 2 and the most recent Tomb Raider are definitely in the midst of a battle for the best adventure game there is.

Heavy Rain Logo

Heavy Rain is the best Playstation 3 exclusive. A spiritual successor to Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. Quantic Dream once again did not disappoint. Heavy Rain is the most immersive game in the history of gaming. You play as a many protagonists (and possible an antagonist or two) and the graphics are like nothing else you will ever see. Heavy Rain is also an emotional tale of redemption as you play a man whose first son died in a tragic accident. When his second son is kidnapped by a currently well-known serial killer, he most go to leaps and bounds to reclaim his son. On the other end is detective ‘Naaaaahman Jaaydun’. Presumably a Boston cop trying to solve a string of murders whilst working with his on addictive tendencies. Heavy Rain is the best game on the Playstation 3, and its best exclusive.

Playstation 4 Will Launch Globally This Year – Panic Over

A senior official at GameStop confirmed to MVC recently that Sony (our favourite console maker) intends on releasing the Playstaion 4 console globally in 2013 – gearing our excited asses up for a full on worldwide launch this year. No one will miss out.

The statement calms fears that the console will arrive in Europe in 2014.

We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft’s final plans are,” Hogan said, speaking at a conference call with financial analysts.

Sony has had a previous history of staggering the release of consoles around the world, but alas for the Playstation 4 we will all rejoice and share this new found next-generation together.
