Patience and skill is needed if you are to best Indie developer Threye Inc’s latest puzzle platformer, Switch – Or Die.
Priced at a very reasonable $6.99/€ 6.99/£5.59 and available to buy now, the title was first released on PC and has since come runner up for best game of the year in the developer’s home country, India.
“We wanted to make a game that should be relatable to everyone, regardless of age and gender, and thus decided to make the alphabet ‘I’ as the main character, since love for ‘self’ is universal. But the game is also a satire on the me/myself and a selfie obsessed world just as in the game ‘I’ becomes too-self absorbed and thus alienates his friends who he must now win back “– mentions Joshua, the lead developer.
In an odd twist, the game is focused around alphabets and typographically inspired themes – which is right up my street – with 75 levels split over 5 worlds.
Indian game development studio Threye Interactive have published a developer commentary video for their upcoming 2D puzzle platformer Switch – or die trying, releasing on Xbox One in the coming months.
Throughout the video the team briefly introduces the narrative and showcases in more detail the main mechanics, including the unique ‘switching’ mechanic as well as different ways it can be utilised across several levels.
In Switch – or die trying players ‘switch’ across traps and obstacles, speedrun through gruelling situations, and test their reflexes with unique environmental interactions.
Following known 2D platforming mechanics such as jumping, wall jumping and shooting, Switch – or die trying introduces a unique ‘switching’ mechanic which not only affects the platforms in several ways but also grants a double jump, which leads to situations demanding interesting choices to be made within split seconds.
