The 2015 multi million selling indie smash by Team 17 is to have a sequel. The Escapists 2 has been revealed at this years Twitchcon and see’s a number of improvements to the popular sandbox title.
As you can see from the video no stone has been unturned, the sequel will include:-
· Multiplayer – In a first for the series, The Escapists 2 offers drop-in/drop-out play offering both split screen and online play for up to four players in both co-op and versus modes
· New ways to escape – Tie together knotted sheets and use them to climb down high windows in our new multi-level prisons and other new ways to make a break for freedom!
· New items to craft – Build yourself a homemade taser to knock out guards plus many more!
· New combat system – A completely revamped combat system featuring new lock-on targeting and blocking systems plus light and heavy attacks
· New graphical style – A brand new look immerses players in a deeper, richer world while maintaining that unique The Escapists style
· More character customisation – New customisation options let players tweak their avatar to a whole new level. Play as a girl! Go bald! Sport a mullet! The choice is yours
· More things to do – Join a band! Learn to paint! The Escapists 2 will offer more ways than ever to pass the time whilst incarcerated

If all goes to plan it looks like The Escapists 2 could be a successful followup from the first, if you haven’t played the first game then stayed tuned because it is coming to Games with Gold this month. The Escapists 2 is due for release in 2017.
Team17 and Skybound Entertainment have today announced that a brand new and absolutely free Survival Mode update will be available for The Escapists: The Walking Dead, on Xbox One.
The Survival Mode update adds an all new gameplay mode where you must take on a herd of walkers, grunts and legends across three different levels set within The Walking Dead universe.
Taking control of different characters from The Walking Dead universe, players will have to try and survive for as long as possible on the new survival maps set in Meriwether, Alexandria and Woodbury. Battle as Tyreese, Abraham and Michonne, whilst being supported by fellow survivors including the iconic Rick, Carl and Glenn.
The Survival Mode update will also include new weapons and craftables such as the mini gun, sniper rifle and revolver as well as introducing 5 brand new achievements and new leaderboards to compete on.
The new Survival Mode update is available today (24 March) to all owners of The Escapists: The Walking Dead.
The Escapists The Walking Dead is an extremely successful blend of the awesome 8-bit indie hit The Escapists and the comic book series of The Walking Dead. Playing as Rick Grimes, you must lead your group to safety though five areas.
At its undead heart lies all of The Escapists’ mechanics – leveling up through exercise and reading, simple item crafting and the way in which you must plot, prepare and execute your escape. Of course this time you aren’t escaping from the clutches of the prison guards, but avoiding the undead horde and solving the story based objectives that centre on key events in the comic series.
The game starts as you wake in Harrison Memorial Hospital – the whole level is one big tutorial, taking you by the hand and introducing you to the mechanics behind the game. Other levels have you leading your group through Greene Family Farm, Meriwether Correctional Facility, Woodbury and Alexandria.
Each day follows a similar pattern to the core game of The Escapists, but instead of annoying the guards if you misbehave, the zombie threat level increases with undead encounters more likely to happen within your safe area. Missing meal times, chores and head counts also has a negative effect on your group morale, and they will be less likely to follow you on scavenging missions – not a massive issue – but team mates will come in handy when you venture further afield in search of the more valuable loot.
New items appear in the various desks spread throughout each level every day, and it’s the collection and crafting of items that allows you to progress by making tools, or weapons to survive. This is where your time will vanish. In-between your daily chores, you are free to scavenge but venturing outside your safe area can attract a higher threat level so your best bet is to do this at night. Venturing further afield rewards you with the best loot – like duct tape or timber – there’s also backpacks lying around that contain crafting notes or collectible comic books, there’s even firearms or special melee weapons to find too which can be given to your group so that they can fend off the undead themselves.
If you do get on the wrong side of a zombie you start from your bed the next morning, the threat level will have increased and you will have missed the opportunity to save, which is only offered should you choose to retire to your bed at the end of each day. If a member of your group is knocked out by a zombie, you have a short window of time to revive them and send them to their bed to recover – fail and the next time you see them will be as their undead corpse shuffles towards you.
One of the harshest lessons in The Escapists was punishment for failure – your progress was reset and all your items confiscated. The Walking Dead edition allows you to continue your progress without punishment and allows you to leave as many items lying around as you please. It makes for a far more enjoyable experience with greater exploration opportunities without the worry of the ever-watchful prison guards ruining your fun.
Money is better used too. Doing chores for your group earns you coins that can be spent with vendors who make their way out at night and can be located at several locations, offering strong shovels, pickaxes, ammo and weapons and more for your perusal.
Just like The Escapists, The Walking Dead edition is really addictive. Hours drifted by as I played “just one more day”, building up Rick’s strength and gathering resources to execute my master plan to complete an objective and move my group on to the next area. The Escapists The Walking Dead is a fantastic addition to the series and I hope there’s more themed Escapists games planned!

This time you aren’t avoiding the patrolling prison guards, but the shuffling hordes of the undead and rather than using the TV series as its influence, The Escapists: The Walking Dead goes back to the source for its inspiration – the comics.
The standalone title should be shuffling in sometime during “late summer”.

I push my desk under the ventilation shaft and clamber up, the cover blocking my way is off in a matter of seconds using the screwdriver I had bought from Bob earlier in the day, working my way through the ventilation system I visit a fellow inmate who sells me a bar of soap. Together with a stinky old sock I craft a mace and ‘sock’ the nearest guard and grab his uniform. I walk out into the yard undetected by the other prison officers. Next to the chain link fence is a hole where a shovel has been conveniently left, jumping in I continue the tunnel and dig my way out… I’m free… then I wake up still trapped in my cell. It was all just a dream and the tutorial to The Escapists.
The Escapists is a lighthearted top down adventure that puts you in the pixellated shoes of an inmate. From the rather pleasant confinement of Center Perks to the harsh maximum confinement of HMP Iron Gate, you must work out how to escape each of the six prisons in the shortest time possible. There’s no set routine of how each prison plays out, sure there’s the daily grind of getting up, attending roll call, eating, exercising, showering and working your day job but everything else is different – you are asked different favours by your fellow inmates and the items for sale or hidden in the various cell desks change – reloading a checkpoint makes the items shuffle too so you can’t rely on trial and error if your plan is based on looting a certain item.
The gameplay strikes a balance between sim and puzzle, but if you have an aversion to sims then The Escapists is probably not for you. The style of the game reminded me of my misspent days playing The Great Escape on the C64 and like the 8-bit adventure, The Escapists offers little in the way of hand holding. Money earned is spent on contraband from dealers or on pay phones to purchase ‘tips’ but for the most part you will need to experiment to work out the different ways you can escape – from creating a fake key by creating a mould using putty that you crafted from toothpaste and talcum powder to forging a shovel from timber, a file and a scrap of metal.
The construction of the 200+ craftable items are all rather obvious when you look at what component parts are available to you, but like Minecraft you are restricted by your own creativity. Similarly, your escape plan can be elaborate or simply involve digging a hole in a secluded spot of the prison but if you get busted it’s off to confinement for three days. Upon your return all of your efforts to escape will have been patched up and any items you’ve carefully collected (and hidden) will have been confiscated. It is a harsh punishment for failure but then this is prison!
The success to surviving is to keep your head down – be nice to your fellow inmates (and the guards where possible) and form your escape plan carefully, which sometimes means you will need to spend some time studying in the library to increase your intelligence – there is an attribute system that restricts your speed, movement and ability to craft certain items – only by visiting the gym and library will you increase them.
Prison life follows a strict routine but you can duck out of your responsibilities at any time. Doing so will mean that you will be fired from your job and if you’re spotted by the prison guards during your extracurricular activities, their suspicion levels will increase, max it out and you’re in for a beating waking up in the infirmary with your health replenished, guard suspicion level reduced and any weapons or contraband you held confiscated. Missing roll call isn’t advisable either – the prison goes into lockdown and if you remain hidden, backup is called – upon arrival you are automatically busted.
There are some freedoms to prison life – during the course of the day there are several free periods that you can use to go about whatever business you fancy – hit the gym, visit a loved one in the visitors centre or carry on digging that tunnel to freedom with plastic spoons you stole from the canteen. Free time is also a great time to complete favours or purchase items from fellow inmates. Each day there are several inmates with a handful of items for sale although if they dislike you don’t expect them to sell you anything. You can raise their opinion of you by doing favours or giving them useful items, this comes with its own issues though. You can’t go around giving gifts to anyone; you can only give items to prisoners that are offering something for sale, which means if you accept a favour to give Bob a plastic comb you can only give it to him on the day that he is selling – it can be most frustrating especially as you can only have four favours active at any one time – rejecting a favour only makes you unpopular.
It’s easy to become absorbed in the daily grind of prison life – to succeed you have to manage your time effectively to sneak in some recon of the prison layout, gather supplies or to increase your physical attributes while at the same time juggle relationships with the guards and inmates – no not those kind of relationships! What works for one prison might not work for another and each one gets steadily harder as you progress through the six prisons. There’s also a leaderboard showing you just how slow (or quick) you are at escaping compared to your friends – I won’t be winning any awards for fast getaways anytime soon!
The Escapists is a charming yet devious prison sim. Hours flew by as I plotted how to escape – at times the difficulty was excruciating as every person in the prison wanted my head under their boot but even after turning the game off my mind was racing to work out where I had gone wrong and just how I could tweak my plan to get around a hurdle that I hadn’t accounted for. The success of The Escapists is how well you can think outside the box, or rather, outside the prison cell – I’m sure there will be plenty of adventures to tell once the game releases on February 13.

One-man band Mouldy Toof Studios’ Chris Davis has joined development forces with Team17 to release The Escapists for Xbox One and PC on February 13.
There are six different ways to escape from each of the six prisons; six is the magic number! The prisons vary from minimal security to the harsh confines of a POW camp. The sandbox environment of each prison offers the opportunity to work in ten different day jobs that will reward you with valuable supplies that you will need to plan your escape. There’s over 200 items to find, which can be used to craft over 50 different items.
Avoiding guards, attending roll calls and adhering to each prison’s schedule are key if you want to get away scot-free, the only question is how long will it take you to escape and how will you do it?
