Microsoft Acquires Nokia’s Mobile Phones Business Unit

Both Microsoft and Nokia have recently announced that Microsoft will purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, license Nokia’s patents, and license and use Nokia’s mapping services. This will put Microsoft in full control of the Lumia brand and have its own in-house mobile devices teams!

Quoted by Steve Ballmer (Microsoft CEO):

“It’s a bold step into the future – a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies. Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft’s share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services…

We are excited and honored to be bringing Nokia’s incredible people, technologies and assets into our Microsoft family. Given our long partnership with Nokia and the many key Nokia leaders that are joining Microsoft, we anticipate a smooth transition and great execution,” Ballmer said. “With ongoing share growth and the synergies across marketing, branding and advertising, we expect this acquisition to be accretive to our adjusted earnings per share starting in FY15, and we see significant long-term revenue and profit opportunities for our shareholders.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will pay 3.79 billion Euro’s to purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, and an extra 1.65 billion Euro’s to license Nokia’s patents, for a total transaction price of 5.44 billion Euro’s in cash! Microsoft will draw upon its overseas cash resources to fund the transaction which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia’s shareholders, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

I wonder how long it will be before an Xbox branded phone hits the market?

Skype on Windows Phone 8 – Now as Video Chat

Although you should be familiar with Skype come Xbox One when it is released on November 22nd this year, but Windows Phone 8 users can ‘finally’ Skype as of now. The video and chat messaging service on Windows Phone 8 has had a new update that introduces video calls and video messages.

Quoted from the Skype Team:

Windows Phone 8 users can record and share a personal video message, which the chosen recipient can play as soon as they sign into Skype. This allows users to capture and share a fleeting memory, create a heartfelt reminder or simply tell a friend or family member “wish you were here” – even when their friends and loved ones are not available. Once your contact has received a video message from you, they can reply back with a video right away.

To grab the updated Skype App on the Windows Phone store just follow this direct link:

The new update also has a few bug fixes, so even if you don’t fancy a video call it still has a number of improvements to the application.

ThisisXbox.com Windows Phone 8 News App – Out Now

thisisxbox on windows phone

In our efforts to branch out and support the amazing amount of users who visit thisisxbox.com via our mobile site (m.thisisxbox.com) we also decided to create an App for Windows Phone 8 – and this is now available from the Windows Phone Marketplace.

We call this out ‘little effort’ because Version 1.0 was designed as a learning process, to get the headlines out there quicker than loading up and searching for us on your mobile Internet Explorer, and it enabled us to get to know the certification processes for App development with Microsoft. Version 1 can be downloaded right now by searching for THISISXBOX NEWS on your Windows Phone 8, or by visiting the link below.

If the UK is not your locale, then you will be encouraged to click a button to get the app in your own location. The app relies on data from our feeds and content might be unavailable during server down time or maintenance. Please note that a cleaner, crisper, smoother, better metro version 2.0 is already in planning stages for a Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 launch in the new year as an update and we do not receive any identifiable information from this app.

Obviously if you are already reading this on your ThisisXbox News app – thank you for downloading it!!

#Drawtopia For Windows Phone Out Now – Taking Marketplace By Storm

Developers Super Smith Brothers, has released their second Window Phone game – Drawtopia which is available now from the marketplace for both Windows Phone 7.X and Windows Phone 8 devices at the cost of absolutely nothing! This FREE game is currently taking the Windows Marketplace by storm having now been listed in the Top 5 of the ‘New & Rising’ list in the US, and Top 10 and still rising in the United Kingdom.

So, what’s all the fuss about?

Unlike traditional puzzle games, Drawtopia features a physics based model based on user touch input. You are presented with a challenge that you must draw on screen with your fingers, but it is not as easy nor as simple as it may seem or appear. It’s highly addictive and described as a journey through colour and space as one ball undertakes an epic quest across some lines to reach an exit… or something like that anyway 🙂

Due to demand the developers have confirmed that DLC will be winging its way to the game in the near future.

You absolutely MUST download Drawtopia for yourself from the link below. It’s a fun game that once you start you’ll find it hard to put down!

A New Kickstarter Campaign is ‘LUMIN’

Earlier on this morning Shadow Galley Media announced their new Kickstarter campaign for LUMIN; their first major release, which if all goes to plan will be released in October for Windows Phone (and other Mobile OS’s) at a charge of… £0.00!

Check out their Kickstarter video:

To pull directly from their Kickstarter page;

LUMIN is a retro inspired side scrolling platform game about one girls journey to bring color back into her world. The player takes control of Katelyn Demissio, a young girl, as she journeys into the Kingdom of Lumin to rid the land of ‘The Grey’, restore color to the kingdom, and rescue the royal family. Of course, nothing is so straight forward and we soon learn prior to the games start that Katelyn is a lost member of the royal Lumin family who was taken from the kingdom by former master-at-arms Demissio during ‘The Grey’s’ invasion. On his deathbed Demissio reveals Katelyn’s true heritage and she sets out to save her family and bring color back to LUMIN. Many surprise twists and turns will be revealed during the games progression that will keep the player on their toes and wanting to see what comes next.

I am a massive supporter of getting more apps and games released on the Windows Phone platform. I was their when it was announced t0 the world and have supported it ever since. If you want, like me, to see new and unique games like this make it onto Windows Phone and help a new and promising young studio then head on over to their Kickstarter page and visit them on Instagram.
