Yesterday Microsoft made the surprising announcement that from June 9th, the Xbox One will be available without Kinect for a reduced pice of £349 RRP here in the UK and $399 in the US. Along with that announcement came the news that also from June 9th, all the media apps that required a user to have a Gold level subscription in order to use the apps with their Xbox 360 or Xbox One will no longer be restricted by this pay-wall and will therefore be fully usable if you only have a Silver level Xbox account.
Today in the official support pages for Xbox, In the Xbox Support FAQ for Gold Subscription, it has been revealed that Gold level members who wish to return to Silver, due to the paywall removal for the above apps, can request a refund and a return to Silver level but requests must be made before August 31st. The FAW States:
Will I be able to cancel my Gold membership?
Yes. Once the Xbox One and Xbox 360 system updates become available in June, Xbox Live Gold members who purchased a paid membership before that day can cancel and receive a pro-rata refund of any unused remaining days between the date of cancellation and the date their paid Gold membership ends. Cancellation and pro-rata refund requests must be made by August 31, 2014 and require six to eight weeks for processing. Free or trial Gold memberships are not eligible for a refund. To request your pro-rata refund, please click http://support.xbox.com/contact-us after the system updates become available in June.
