White Night review

With such a vast range of ID@Xbox games due out over the next few months it’s going to be a great time for Xbox One owners. One of the games I had been keeping a close eye on was White Night, I was hoping for a change of pace and I certainly got one.

Before I say any more I must tell you this, this game doesn’t auto save, even when you complete a chapter, there are armchairs that you discover that you can sit and rest in, and the game will then save. It worth making the effort to re-trace your steps to save otherwise your efforts could be for nothing, I found out the hard way, avenge me.

Anyway, let’s get back on track. White Night is set during the depression in Boston. After leaving a bar you are involved in a car accident, you are hurt but you survive. You eventually come across an eerie mansion, things only get stranger once you get inside.

The game feel like a mix between Limbo, with its creepy environment and puzzles and Alan Wake, making use of Light to survive. You can carry 12 matches at any time and they last about 40 seconds each so you need to use your time well. Light will uncover items you may need, or clues to help you move on. There will be times where you’ll need to find an electricity supply because the item you need requires two hands.


As if that wasn’t enough there are ghosts that will chase you and kill you if you can’t get away, at the beginning of the game you are only able to walk because of the car crash but eventually you gain the ability to run, there were plenty of occasions that when I ran into a different room the camera angle would change sending my character it a completely different direction and giving the ghost the chance to catch me, yet another reason why it’s important to save often. If you run out of matches you had better hope there are some nearby as you quickly lose your mind in the dark and it will be game over again for you.

The black and white art style really works well, it’s simple but just works. Its great discovering new areas using the different light sources, and when coupled up with the awesome sound design, it creates an amazing atmosphere. The music sucks you in by being very soothing, only to be interrupted by a clap of thunder, or a spine chilling scream from the ghosts.

I’d describe White Night as a tense game rather than scary, Outlast for example, that scared the bejesus out of me whereas White Night keeps me on the edge of my seat. The constant need to keep a supply of matches, the fact anytime I open a door I could be faced with another ghost or even worrying I’ve gone too long without a save make it tense, but it’s a great experience.


I really enjoyed the story, though to get the most out of it you need to spend time finding the different photographs, newspapers and journal entries that are scattered around the different chapters. I couldn’t help feeling like I was playing through an alternative version of Alan Wake, but that’s not a bad thing.

There are some nice achievements in the game, I’ve not really been paying much attention to achievements in general recently but there were a couple that caught my eye including finishing the game in one night and also finishing the game on a full moon day as well as reading all of the newspaper articles. There are your standard completing a chapter achievements as well but it was nice to see some more thought go into the list.

White Night certainly didn’t let me down, there were times where I found myself getting frustrated because I couldn’t find what I was looking for, and I found the change in camera angles whilst being chased tiresome too, but I enjoyed the game and would definitely recommend you try it, it’s a well thought out well presented game that kept me going back for more, you’ll have fun with this game, I know I did.
