Worms Collection Review

Three of Team 17’s comedic and downright addictive Worms games have made it to retail as part of the Worms Collection pack from Mastertronic. If you do not already own any of the titles when they were previously released on the Xbox LIVE Arcade, then now is as good a time as any to get into the Worms gameplay before the launch of the highly anticipated Worms Revolution later this year on the Xbox LIVE Arcade.

If you have been living under a rock and not all that familiar with the Worms gameplay concept at all – Worms is a turn-based game where each player takes control a small platoon of earthworms and battles against other players and their team of Worms using outlandish weaponry across bright and deformable landscapes. Many of the games features a ton of customisation options where you can name your team of Worms, dress them in more suitable attire and change their voice tones to suit how you want them to appear in battle. It’s a fun battle of wits that’s generally described as simple to play, but hard to master.

Here’s a run-down of what content is included on the disc – all games feature Xbox LIVE Multiplayer.

Worms – The original and classic 2D title that was released on the Xbox LIVE Arcade early March 2007. Worms have evolved and are taking no prisoners! Team17 brought its popular franchise to the Xbox360 and this was the first turn-based strategy game for the platform. The main objective for Worms is a pretty simple concept of attacking the enemy worms and remaining the last player alive with at least one Worm still in play.

Worms 2: Armageddon – Second time around, it’s bigger and better than ever for this stunning and feature packed new edition that originally launched on the 10th anniversary of the release of Worms Armageddon as it dropped on the Xbox LIVE Arcade July 2009. Team17 delivered amazing new weapons, a bigger and more incredible customisation of Worms teams (including around 60 voice sets, hats and more), tons of game options, totally new physics & more dynamic play, persistent fire and much, much more.

Worms Ultimate Mayhem – is a souped-up, re-vamped, high definition reimagining of Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem, bringing both games together in one incredibly over-stuffed, over-the-top package. Including all of the content from the original games, Worms Ultimate Mayhem also brings a whole host of anarchic additions – more single-player missions, more puzzles, even more customisation and a load more worms! This title was originally released on the Xbox LIVE Arcade in 2011.

As well as three fantastic Worms titles the Worms Collection for retail also includes six pieces of DLC as a nice Bonus Pack for Worms 2: Armageddon. You can optionally install to your HDD the Worms 2: Battle Pack, Forts Pack, Mayhem Pack, Puzzle Pack, Retro Pack and lastly Time Attack Pack – bringing a whole range of new missions, landscapes and a heap of content to keep you entertained and ready for battle.

All three games play from disc as if they were previously installed to HDD, meaning that they load just like an Xbox LIVE Arcade game. You will not be able to double-up on your Achievements if you had previously bought the games from the Arcade and were hoping to see the retail collection as a stand-a-lone set of additional Achievements. DLC content however is required to be installed to your HDD from the disc itself and will require some space.

Worms is a fantastic franchise from the same team who brought Lemmings into the gameplay world and another great game where you could spend hours and hours strategically planning how to rule the landscapes or just kill your opponents in the weirdest and wackiest way imaginable. As part of a collection on one retail disc for a budget price, Worms Collection is a great value package of three full games and six pieces of DLC content.

Only really suitable if you don’t own any of the Xbox LIVE Arcade Worms games already – and if you don’t, then shame on you!

Worms is a must have for everyone.
